Hi Han!

after reading in depth, i realise that i see where u are coming from.

i agree with you that they had no right to go all out to twist facts and manipulate them to suit their agenda... that the misrepresentation of information is something very disturbing.

Does anyone know if FLS prints the books themselves? Where does the book originate from?

Adrienne:

The issue is not whether people are free to preach their religion. I strongly support the right of people to pursue their own faith, and to preach it, as long as they do not coerce, deceive or physically force people in anyway.

The problem now lies in the fact that this book clearly misrepresents many factual details, to the extent where I can argue that it is fraudulent.

I don't believe the Catholic church would ever approve of this. The Catholic church has a long tradition of scientific inquiry and scholarship. To blatantly distort the facts in order to achieve the agenda... is a betrayal of the Catholic faith.

No, the issue is not with Catholics. The issue is with this organisation only, and their methods of teaching.

Book looks really cool but think the Family Life Society is going to go through some rough times about this.

First thing first, they helped me when I was pregnant out of wedlock so I am not going to slam this group of people who went the extra mile to help my parents accept my situation and then my decision to keep the kid.

From what I have read so far Catholic organizations have been preaching Catholic morals and beliefs about premarital sex and all that in secular schools which are upsetting people to no end.

I champion their cause and understand why they went all the way because with God there is no grey area. It is either right or wrong. They cannot preach the secular standpoint and compromise their Faith and belief.

In this situation, they are not the ones who should pay the price of the public outrage.

The schools and MOE made the decision to let them to teach this class in the secular schools (ie non- Christian schools) so they should pay the price not FLS or any other Catholic organization that ran these classes and had to pay the price of the controversy.

If MOE would come up with a neutral course in SEX ED instead, the public would not be thirsting for the blood of these organizations who mean well but have stepped on people's tails.

I feel that it might be more effective in this instance to get people who went through the whole premarital sex thing and then the whole abortion or single parenting thing to give an "unplugged" talk about their experience... and then have someone explain why condoms are not successful at preventing pregnancies and why rhythm methods are not foolproof... so that sometimes the best way to not get into trouble is to not be a curious cat.

[...] I agree that abstinence and fidelity are private moral behaviours which should be encouraged, as long as it is a free and voluntary choice not made through coercion, fraud or physical force. The problem is that this free choice is effectively made void by the fact that the Family Life Society lied about the effectiveness of condoms, and the nature of its ineffectiveness.
never knew sex education existed even in the middle ages. but then again, perhaps thats the reason why the characters of LOTR seemed to flow like ants - from elves to hobbits, to dwarves, to human, to trolls... etc

in retrospect, rubber probably wasnt discovered back then.. hehe

This is hilarious and a complete farce! Complete misinformation and obviously reflects the views of some narrow minded individuals! I really hope it's not another stupid 'mistake' by AJC to get them to hold the workshop cos during my days in AJC (89/90) there's been so many that the principal was affectionately called Mokster!

I think that this is really sick. The brainwashing part really makes people mistrust this kind of "education". It is rather sad since people nowadays are exposed to many of such talks and some facts that are presented may be true, but due to these "black sheep" out their trying to cheat people of their money, I can really understand why people get angry. Anyway, it is stated clearly that external vendors are hired when the teachers are unable to teach students about a particular subject. However, I beg to differ in this case since there are already sexuality education in the science syllabus, imposed by the government. So, with reliable science books which presents the facts much more accurately than these talks, I find that there's no real need to waste money and time listening to such a useless talk.

It's worse in the education system since people are being forced to attend the talk. The worse thing is, the government give grants for schools to subscribe to these talks. Perhaps, if these external vendors can come under closer scruntiny from people who specialize in a specific area, more reliable information will be provided and conveyed to everyone, and make the talk a more meaningful and fruitful one.

*blinks* That's just a Very Subtle Satire of what presumably is being taught in Sex Ed. in schools, right? Like, something that's just going around on the internet, right? It's not actually a workbook (albeit rather touched up and gothic-cised) for our Sex Ed, is it? Only it looks bloody genuine and...my brain refuses to process the fact that this may actually be used.

*read again*

BLOODY FUCK THEY ACTUALLY USE THAT IN SCHOOLS?? JC, issit? Because I haven't received a copy of that workbook yet. I think I'd laugh myself horribly sick if we ever get it, though.
